History & Architecture

The Altinate/San Gaetano Cultural Center is a vibrant cultural, educational, and exhibition venue located in a historic palace in the heart of Padova, near the church of San Gaetano. Originally designed by architect Vincenzo Scamozzi and built between 1582 and 1693 as a Theatine convent, the building became municipal property in 1874 and later served as a courthouse.

After a major fire in 1920, it was restored by engineer Tullio Paoletti, giving it its present appearance. Today, the center hosts a variety of exhibitions and cultural events supported by the City of Padova, the University of Padova, and other public institutions.

The building’s spaces include a multifunctional hall and foyer in the basement, a central gallery, the main exhibition cloister, and a café on the ground floor, additional galleries and library offices on the first floor, and the historic civic library and reading rooms on the second floor.
